Alan Kurdi was a three-year-old Syrian boy of Kurdish ethnic background who made headlines around the world after being drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, as part of the Syrian refugee crisis.

Ask Me Not to Rest in Peace

With all mortal ties broken
Untethered I fly away
With freedom I felt so less often
Towards my Maker I sway.

I leave behind my loved ones
Alongside my shattered dreams
Usurping my laughter with
A nightmare of my screams.

Albeit someday the sinners will pay
Am I the last one to burn this way?
So I wonder why everyone does today
“Rest in peace” bother to say.

No revenge but justice I seek
No pity but respect I deserve
No tears but resolve I need
No words but action I demand.

While my sisters live in fear
Of the bawdy and brazen stares
While Laxmi and Durga they hold dear
But treat us women as wares.

While the alleys echo stories of shame
And lust goes on a trample spree
While the victims get all the blame
And the beasts keep roaming free.

While more eyes are left to rue
And smiles are torn apiece
Ask me not, and lest you too,
Agree to rest in peace.

There has been shock and outrage in India over the gang rape of a 23-year-old student on a city bus in the capital, Delhi on December 16th, 2012. Police said she was raped for nearly an hour, and both she and her companion were beaten with iron bars, then thrown out of the moving bus into the street. The 23-year-old medical student died in a Singapore hospital where she was being treated for severe injuries. The four convicts were hanged before dawn on March 20, 2020.

A Wish

A river that runs deep and calm,
Silently shares its wealth with all.

No wonder why then,
Blessed those around you are,
Who from a distance near,
Depths in your deeds measure,
Or feel the peace within,
From far when your thoughts they treasure.

But at times often do,
Sight across a noisy brook,
Which though shall shallow be,
Rolls over its troubles,
With fun and glee.

The waves that silently sweep the shore,
Have but swallowed the storm, a few miles before.

No wonder why then,
All eyes on you do fail,
To watch the worries,
With which your world does trail,
Safely hidden since they lie,
Behind the smiles that you sail.

But at times often do,
Empty your heart and hassles,
To a soul closest to you,
For easily is broken one stick,
Than when there are two.

The shining stars shed every ray,
As the endless space sweeps their twinkle our way.

So much like the boundless faith,
In which your mind you hold,
For the pair of His hands,
That you say all lives they mold,
And sacrifice your dish and dime,
When your hands for the prayers you fold.

But at no time ever do,
Weaken your belief whenever,
The logic and laws of science I sew,
Since forever I wish these reasons remain,
Of all the least dearest to you.

As You Sail Away

Night it was when a breeze
welcomed me by the sea
when the stars and the moon
had lit the scene with their glory.

No sooner they assured me
the best time on the shore to be
is only after the sun has played
its part of the everyday story.

I tried to tell this to my mind
but it was already lost
drowned in thousands of thoughts
I pulled it out with lot of cost.

Varied though they all were
all sailed in a boat common
amongst them there were none
that had not your name written.

The gushing waves carried your will
that clashed with the shore rocky
and when they rose over those
they echoed your joy and ecstasy.

Then there were those that swept
across the sand peacefully
competing the silence that you speak with
behind the doors of tranquility.

The wind whistled by
in its charm my heart began to hover
serene as your sight
pleasing like the smile you shower.

More from the seagull was heard
when it soared across in glee
gracefully it flew like the free bird
that I always found in thee.

And now as your life sails ahead
like the ship away on the horizon
may fair weather precede your journey
to your dream destination.

And a fairy tale I could have wished for you
but this life I find of two things made
we keep going through bit of both
the scorching sun and the soothing shade.

So with every new sunrise,
may the angels bless you with a heart,
with courage enough to battle against any harm,
with strength enough to steer in any storm.

Remember these words, oh friend,
you be at any place and let any season it be
in my prayers your name you will always see
and my wishes forever stay with thee.

A Shared Dream

The humdrum of township had come on a ride,
I followed my feet to the countryside.
A poet was on a pry for a poem,
On the unfurled meadow as I walked that autumn.

The verdant vale was calling in all her charms,
I paced my path to lay in her arms.
On my way down I met a breeze so blithe,
In fragrance of beauty she had herself writhe.

As she danced along, I wondered aloud her redolence,
And even louder was my awe, when a chortle broke the silence.
With a twig in her hand, a girl hopped down the hill,
On her trail were a score of sheep that followed her will.

In her hand was a meadow saffron, which on her way she had picked,
She swirled in triumph and to the sky she showed her twig.
For all alone she had led her team to the tune she sang,
Nothing equaled her ecstasy, as she lifted one of her lamb.

No sooner then, the land so serene began to shine,
How could I not pen down, her smile so pure and pristine?
The glint in her eyes eclipsed everything else,
Then, I knew why the breeze was so blessed.

“What could ever harm a beauty so chaste?”, thought I.
But then suddenly, all her sheep hurried to her in haste.
The lamb in her arms began to bleat,
As they all saw dark clouds stride as a sheet.

A squall on the mountain butchered the breeze,
As the girl and her troupe hide behind the trees.
With no pause then, the cloud began to burst,
She closed her wet eyes, fearing the worst.

I too closed mine, for I wasn’t sure,
What plans on His cards did the Lord have for her?
And then in my thoughts I conjured a scene,
The lost light in her eyes would again begin to gleam.

She would start singing on a new bright day,
For no worry in this world is forever to stay.
To many more tunes then she’ll dance,
And I can’t count how many will be lost in her trance.

And then, when I opened my eyes in the world real,
The clouds were still busy in their drizzle.
As I left, she had not opened her eyes it did seem,
I prayed to the Almighty, let her share my dream.
